GreenLaning Tours — Own a 4×4 vehicle but never taken it Off-Road?

Taking your 4×4 off road for the first time can feel daunting, especially when you’re unsure what’s legal, what’s suitable for your vehicle, or what to expect on the trail.

GreenLaning Tours has been developed specifically to provide new 4×4 drivers a relaxed, well‑supported introduction to Yorkshire’s most impressive unsurfaced roads.

We are not qualified driving instructors and our role is not to teach you how to drive your vehicle. However we are experienced off-road drivers who know exactly what is legal to drive and which lanes are most suitable for un-modified 4×4 vehicles.

We therefore provide the opportunity for you to do a ‘one-off’ taster of GreenLaning without the need to worry about the severity of the tracks you will be driving on and without going to the expense of buying all the additional safety gear such as winches, ropes, tracks etc.

Our days combine a gentle introduction to greenlaning with  stunning landscapes, and responsible access so you can build confidence without pressure.

Yorkshire’s green lanes are part of the public highway network, shared with walkers, cyclists, horse riders, farmers, and local communities. Because of this, we rigidly stick to legal routes, small groups, and considerate driving that aligns with widely recognised good practice for unsurfaced roads.

What we offer new off-roaders

1) Guided green laning days in the Yorkshire Dales

Our beginner‑friendly outings explore some of Yorkshire’s best-known areas for legal green lanes. Routes are chosen for scenery, interest, and suitability for first‑timers.

They blend valley views, historic tracks, and classic unsurfaced roads.

The aim is for steady and enjoyable progress to ensure a calm, confidence‑building day that respects the landscape and other users.

2) Proper route planning (legal, checked, and up to date)

“Green lane” is a casual term but what matters legally is the classification of each individual route. In the Yorkshire Dales, for example, only certain rights of way carry motor‑vehicle access, and driving on footpaths, bridleways, restricted byways, or open land without permission is illegal.

To keep things simple and safe:

  • We build our days around routes that are confirmed to carry vehicular rights and we follow any closures or Traffic Regulation Orders.
  • We keep groups small to reduce congestion, protect surfaces, and maintain good relationships with local communities and other countryside users.

What’s included on a tour day

You bring a road‑legal 4×4 preferably with an all terrain bias set of tyres; we take care of the structure, safety, and guidance that make the day enjoyable and stress‑free.

  • Pre‑drive briefing covering the plan for the day, safety points, and how we minimise impact on the lanes.
  • Guided convoy driving with clear communication so you always know what’s happening next.
  • Stops for scenery photos, because Yorkshire deserves to be savoured.
  • A responsible driving ethos that helps keep green lanes open and enjoyable for everyone.

How we protect Yorkshire while we explore it

We follow and promote the principles that keep green laning sustainable. National guidance emphasises:

  • Legality — using only routes with motor‑vehicle rights, obeying closures, and ensuring vehicles are fully road legal.
  • Good judgement — considering weather, vehicle weight, lane width, and conditions that could risk damaging the surface.
  • Care for the environment — staying on the defined track, avoiding unnecessary noise, taking litter home, and giving plenty of space to walkers, cyclists, and horses.

Who these tours suit

Ideal for:

  • First‑time green laners who want a calm, supportive introduction.
  • New 4×4 owners who want to understand their vehicle’s capabilities in a sensible, structured way.
  • Friends, couples, and families looking for a day outdoors with big views and a real sense of adventure.
